The answer is quite easy. Here's a hint: Think historical modes of travel. Why did Ontario used to be called Upper Canada, and Quebec lower Canada? The reason is quite simple. The only way to get anywhere in the 1600-1700's was by canoe. You went down stream travelling from York (Toronto) to the East Coast, hence 'going down east'. CD
