can't understand why folks in the northeast say they are going down east when the they refer to going up to pei or nova scotia canada??? Simple. Comes from days of sailing vessels. Prevailing winds are from west to east. So when you go from New England to the maritimes, you're going downwind and eastward. Down east. In those days, wind was far more important than maps.
