Some further insights from Nokia's 3G slides:

1. Licensing - some 130 3G licenses are expected to be awarded in the next 3 years - 90 in Europe; 31 in Asia Pacific; 9 in China. 80 of these will be awarded this year.

2. Commercial Introduction - The year 2002 is expected to be the year of 3G - mass commercial launches.

3. 3G Coverage - By 2005 all dense urban areas and urban areas will have 100% coverage; suburbs, 90% coverage. This indicates that infrastructure work will continue for some time.

4. Web usage - After four years of growth (2002 through 2005), users will spend as many minutes on web functions as with normal voice. Operators will be receiving more revenue from web functions than from voice.

5. Cell phone growth - By the end of 2002 there will be about 1 billion cellular subscribers and 250 web handsets in use. By the end of 2003 these numbers will have grown to 1.2 billion and 500 million respectively. Extrapolating to 2005 looks like (roughly) 1.5 billion cell phone subscribers, with all having web access capability.

6. Nokia and GPRS - Nokia has delivered 40 GPRS core network solutions and has 25 announced deals. Nokia calls itself the only supplier in a GPRS volume delivery situation.

I hope to add some more tomorrow. Sisuman
