When a sentence is greater for a gay murder than a straight murder, a premium seems to have been placed on the life of the gay.

I don't like the hate crime laws either. But I don't think they imply that one life is worth more than another. Whether you're murdered for hate or murdered for money or some other conventional reason, you're equally dead. The hate crime laws are mainly political, IMO, to reassure the affected group that society doesn't approve. And also to remind those parts of our society that don't get it. I'd rather see some oversight or sunshine on the standard justice rather than make hate crimes federal.
