They need a lobby, and a history. As I already said, I am not personally in favor of hate crime laws. But they stem from a perception of unequal threat, not an unequal estimate of the value of life. Questioning the accuracy of the perception of unequal threat is entirely valid; claiming that supporters of hate-crime laws are trying to impose an unequal valuation of life is - in my opinion - over the top. It seems to me a question of need and method rather than motive, and I think that attributing such motives to those who disagree with you stands in the way of reasonable discussion.

As I said before, it seems analogous to the previous discussion. We have programs designed to help gay youth feel more comfortable with themselves, and to help straight youth attain a higher degree of tolerance for gay youth. It is entirely possible that those pursuing these goals are using methods and materials inappropriate to the venue, or are otherwise pursuing those goals in an objectionable manner. These are definitely reasonable grounds for debate. Accusing these programs of being a deliberate attempt to convince straight or undecided youth to become gay misses the point entirely and is, I think, pointless and unnecessarily inflammatory.
