Karen was brave to do math publicly.
I would never attempt such a feat.

I agree with you that differences of any kind are the kiss of death in middle school. By high school, in larger, more metropolitan schools anyway, kids begin to find groups where they feel comfortable. That's why gay groups can be a positive thing. When gay was still a word that was whispered in horror, many gays found acceptance in the theatre crowd, which has always been a place toward which "different" kids gravitated.

Because I've worked with a lot of troubled teens, and raised two (thankfully not troubled so far) of my own, I am probably overly sensitive to the harm that can be done by peers and by adults to a vulnerable, fragile adolescent.

FOr that reason, and because I think it is our job as responsible adults, we shouldn't allow abuse or severe
humiliation to be excused as normal, makes-a-man-out-of you, behavior. We do society no favors by passing off cruelty as acceptable under any circumstances. (and I don't mean a little bit of teasing- which we all had to learn to handle)

I haven't got the URL :) but I believe there is a higher rate of suicide attempts in the teen gay population. It's just a tough thing to have to deal with along with big ears and acne.
