FRANKFURT, GERMANY, 2000 JUL 18 (Newsbytes) -- By Sylvia Dennis, Newsbytes.
Deutsche Telekom [NYSE:DT] is said to have restarted its courtship of Qwest Communications
[NASDAQ:QWST].

The media reports, which have been fleshed out in this morning's Die Welt newspaper in
Germany, said that Deutsche Telekom has reopened its four-month-old talks with Qwest,
drawing Voice Stream Wireless into the discussions regarding a possible three-way merger.

According to the newspaper, Deutsche Telekom Chairman Ron Sommer has already had a
meeting with Philip Anschutz, Qwest's major shareholder.

The paper also asserts that the German telecommunications giant is in active discussions with
BellSouth, Cable & Wireless and Global Crossing, suggesting that a spinoff of certain Qwest
operations is likely to result from the merger.

When news of the Qwest linkup broke in early March, reports said that the merger had the full
backing of Anschutz, Qwest's largest shareholder with 39 percent of the firm.
