HDR system supports
2.4Mbps

JAPAN- Hitachi Ltd has
received an order from
Nippon Ido Tsushin Ltd for a
trial HDR (high data rate)
mobile communications
system.

Nippon Ido Tsushin Ltd, one
of Japan's new local telecom
service providers, plans to use
this system for evaluating
HDR. The system consists of
terminals, base stations and
network equipment. Hitachi
is developing it in cooperation from Qualcomm
and Cisco.

The basic HDR technology, developed by
Qualcomm, uses CDMA, which is optimal for
data communications at a maximum speed of
2.4Mbps in the 1.25MHz band. It uses a packet
communications, IP-based architecture.

The system is highly compatible with the
existing cdmaOne network, and can use the
same base sites, antennas and antenna towers.

Hitachi also entered into a tie-up with
Qualcomm this January. The two have been
jointly developing an HDR portable phone
system.
