CALCUTTA
CONSUMERS will no longer be victims of irregular gold quality, thanks to the certification scheme of hallmarking by the Bureau of Industrial Standards for gold jewellery.

The system of hallmark has acted as a safeguard to purchasers of gold and gold articles for centuries in various countries.

It indicates that gold articles have been evaluated and tested at an official assaying and hallmarking centre and they have certified that the metal used conforms to the national and international standard of fineness and purity.

BIS will operate this scheme with its network of regional and branch offices all over the country. The certification of purity in gold jewellery will be done in accordance with Indian Standard Specification.

The principal objective behind instituting a credible system of assaying and hallmarking will be to develop export competitiveness of gold jewellery and thus provide strong impetus for gold jewellery exporters.

This will also help in developing gold-based financial products, which in turn help mopping up of vast dormant gold resources lying with the household sector.
