Actually, I stated explicitly that religion was unnecessary for ethics. I made clear why I thought that religion was a better bulwark, though, insofar as it affirmed that human concerns are not subjective, but woven into the fabric of things, as it were. It is true that some religions are better for this than others, but I thought it indelicate to make a point of it.
You are also misunderstanding the point about truth. Regardless of what the mechanism is for discovering it, or whether there are several ways, the affirmation that the pursuit of truth matters is also a value judgment, and better supported by the idea that human life has an intrinsic, and not merely imputed, value.
