do not know very much about conservatives
It's hard to generalize based on only a couple of labels so I generally go with the public political agendas of the people who self label themselves. I actually think of myself as a centrist. I often side with the liberals because they are more willing to live and let live, either because they are self-absorbed and don't care or just like to see diversity. The conservatives, at least around here, get so determined to fight and win some proposal that they don't analyse how it will really affect them and their neighborhood, and quality of life.

I can think up a number of examples that led me to think that the bulk of the conservative faction in Austin is made of mindless reactionaries. One was a bitter and devisive campaign to include in the city power utility a nuclear plant. It turned into a war against environmentalists, the conservatives won, and now huge amounts of city taxes go to subsidise a major money loser for the city. To recoup the losses the city had to enact all the conservation measures that the conservatives fought. I see the same thing here with HMOs. The conservatives fought Hillary's health plan with no alternate proposals under the slogan of "I'm going to keep my choice to a doctor". Only now everyone I know has a choice of two Tweedle-Dee and Tweedle-Dum HMO services where you are lucky to see the doctor they choose for you. The conservatives seem so anxious to fight the good fight that they are easily manipulated by those who know the rhetoric and have a profitable agenda.
