Microsoft Hires Gun

By Connie Guglielmo Inter@ctive Week

When the going gets tough, the tough bring in the big
guns. And so Microsoft announced last week it has
hired a new legal eagle to help it with the appeals
phase of its antitrust battle with the government — a
lawyer known for handling Supreme Court appeals.
Carter Phillips, 47, is managing partner at the
Washington, D.C. office of Sidley & Austin (www.
sidley.com). Phillips, who did a stint as a clerk for
then-Chief Justice Warren Burger on the Supreme
Court, will work with Microsoft's outside legal team
from Sullivan & Cromwell.
