Thanx Jules for putting some of my own thoughts into strong words. Several things don't ring true about how DEC handled this situation, which your post has clarified.

I too consider Dr Grove above reproach and I believe that has permeated Intel's organization and dealings with other companies. I think Intel's first reaction of real "surprise" by the way DEC handled the announcement was genuine.

In the absence of any real knowledge of Palmers character and personality, I must say that this reflects badly on him. Since Intel and DEC have had a long relationship, there were much better ways to handle this situation. Any one with any knowledge of Intel would realize that any "attack" would be handled differently than a more businesslike approach to a legitimate business disagreement, particularly after the Pentium has been out for so long.

It seems to me that Palmer has been festering since last August's remark by Craig Barrett or Andy Grove about no longer being able to "copy" technology. It seems to me he has become obsessed with this notion, which with other business reverses he has taken personally, since he tried to interest Intel in the Alpha design in '90 or '91.

The situation brings to mind Congreve's famous line: "Heaven hath no rage like love to hatred turned, nor hell a fury like a (partner) scorned."
