Actually, you must refine your idea of a selection event. Whether or not one member of the population dies matters little; but even if many members die, as long as there is time for them to breed successors, there is no selection. In that sense, a species can be quite maladapted and nevertheless continue to flourish, as long as most members live long enough to mate and wean their young. Insects with fast life cycles are an excellent example of this point: they come to maturity quickly, breed, and die, and that is all that is required to keep a large population of (fill in the blank) to annoy us.......
