This is correct and identifies the reason that maladies such as altheimers are not easily selected out of the population. If a whole species tends to maladaption then all members will disappear. Actually most species that have lived on earth have gone extinct when faced with a better adapted competitor. If no efficent competitors are in place you can get some very unlikely creatures, such as the tree kangaroo of tasmainia.
