Thursday July 20, 9:10 am Eastern Time Company Press Release ST ADSL Chipset Provides Connectivity for 2Wire's Award-Winning HomePortal Residential Gateway \266 "Best of Show" at the Consumer Electronics Show, HomePortal includes ST "Ascot" ADSL chipset plus STLC5046 quad codec GENEVA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 20, 2000-- STMicroelectronics today announced that 2Wire, Inc., the leading supplier of residential gateways, has selected the ST ``Ascot'' ADSL chipset to provide the broadband connectivity function for the 2Wire HomePortal residential gateway.
Optimized for cost-sensitive consumer applications, the Ascot chipset is based on the same ADSL technology proven in ST's Tosca chipset and already installed in more than one million lines. The highly integrated Ascot solution combines the analog front end and all of the digital functions in just two chips, types STLC70134 and STLC70135. Compatible with both full-rate and the G.Lite ADSL standards, it can handle downstream bit rates up to 8Mbits/s and upstream bit rates to 640kbits/s.
``The ST Ascot ADSL chipset provides our HomePortal products with full standards compliance and a strategic combination of high performance and broad industry compatability,'' said Pasquale Romano, vice president of engineering for 2Wire.
2Wire's innovative HomePortal residential gateway products combine a DSL broadband modem with several in-home networking architectures such as Ethernet, HomePNA, and USB to manage an integrated data, voice and entertainment network. Using HomePortal with existing phone wires, everyone in the home can share up to 8Mbps of ADSL connection to the Internet, and household members can share information and resources with each other within the house at data throughputs of up to 10Mbps.
``With the HomePortal, 2Wire is delivering an outstanding solution that brings a new level of user-friendliness to the residential gateway concept,'' commented Pietro Palella, director of STMicroelectronics Wireline Communications Division. ``We are proud of the fact that the designers of this landmark product chose the ST ADSL chipset for the critical broadband connectivity function.''
STMicroelectronics is a leader in providing connectivity technologies for the consumer market. ``We have chosen to target three key technologies that are the key to the consumer market - broadband, V.90 and home networking,'' added Palella. ``With the Pegas.USB and MC-97 modem chipsets, ST provided V.90 connectivity for laptops and desktops, with the Tosca and Ascot chipsets we also added ADSL capability, and now our designers are addressing the home networking area, with products scheduled for introduction in Q3 2000. ST today is uniquely positioned to address all three technologies with highly-integrated, cost-effective solutions.''
