trait has a marked effect on the breeding pattern
The effect only needs confer a slight advantage to become prevalent in a genome. As the generations pass the results of a slight advantage multiply geometricly. The only necessity is that the same selection criteria be present for several generations. The effect can linger beyond strick breeding. If an organism dies before it mates the absence of children is obvious, but there is also an effect on the children's survival if the parent becomes sick or dies after mating.
