The birthday party and the SI Choice Awards are certainly not a "ploy for misdirection" as you call it. Frankly, the SI member base is way too smart to ever be misdirected by *any* ploy (with one or two individual exceptions, I'm sure). :) <g>

Granted, the timing may not be perfect, but the birthday party plans were put in motion long before the recent problems with the site. And, SI really was launched in August of 1995, so it really has been 5 years.

Most importantly, I assure you that none of these events are in any way distracting the engineers who are working diligently on the site.
