Matthews agrees to one-year deal

Shane Matthews agreed to a one-year deal with the Bears on Tuesday. Matthews, who started seven games last season, is expected to backup second-year quarterback Cade McNown. "We feel fortunate about getting Shane back," Bears vice president of player personnel Mark Hatley said. "He had a good workout (on Monday) and we're excited about his return."

News and notes

Former Bears public relations director Bryan Harlan admitted violating the NFL's policy on gambling and commissioner Paul Tagliabue said the league's security personnel worked closely with the team on the case. Harlan resigned Friday, and the Bears did not mention gambling problems in announcing his departure. But the Chicago Sun-Times reported that he was the subject of a federal investigation after his phone number was found in a bookmaker's telephone records. … The Bears signed third-round draft pick Dez White to a three-year contract Wednesday. The wide receiver caught 90 passes for 1,833 yards in three years at Georgia Tech. White, who also returned kicks as a freshman, had 14 career touchdowns. Terms of White's deal were not released. … The Bears have signed eight of their nine draft picks -- the lone holdout is safety Mike Brown from Nebraska. Vice president for player personnel Mark Hatley said he expects Brown, a second-round selection, to be signed by the time the Bears open training camp Friday in Platteville, Wis.
