The transgenic business was the reason that Dolly the sheep was cloned. In transgenics, it is hard to reproduce the good producers and is generally hit and miss, as the capability is added to the animal and not a breeding characteristic. Now that the ability to clone has been proven, when this has been made a routine process, they will be able to mass produce the optimal protein producers consistently in a much more direct and economical fashion than is currently possible. Also, the cows are still a bit out there. Much transgenic work is done is smaller animals for the convenience that they afford in research. While cows produce more milk, they are also alot bigger and more expensive to maintain. That's the reason that the latest breakthrough in excretion has been demonstrated in a mouse system. Now that they know how to do it in a mammal, they will adapt the system to larger mammals.
