Verve, the pros and cons of WCDMA vs. CDMA2000 have been discussed at several sites. What it boils down to (for someone who is not an engineer) is that WCDMA may require more base stations to handle a similar level of traffic, compared to CDMA2000. There are also some design features of CDMA2000 that make its data rate faster than WCDMA. Perhaps the most important impediment to WCDMA is the problem, explained yesterday at the QCOM conference call, that there are several different WCDMA standards competing with one another. Manufacturers don't know which standard to use. No sense in tooling up for the wrong one. In contrast, QCOM can argue that its system really works, costs less, and benefits from QCOM long time experience in designing chips with special features. In (American) football terms, WCDMA is like an end run, trying to circumvent the existing power. CDMA2000 is like a quarterback sneak, and likely to show up on the goal line long before WCDMA even gets to the line of scrimmage. Art
