a minimum of diversification only
In general after a huge catastrophe the story of evolution becomes more like Darwin's original hypothesis of continual change. There are so many niches open and some edible thing or another is in abundance that any tendancy toward utilizing that source is rewarded. The jump from rat to cat does not come in a single step. I will make a wild guess that you start with a rat that eats carrion, gets larger, and is eventually able to catch some live prey (which is probably the idiot child family of some of Andy rat's closer cousins). As times get tougher the faster running, better seeing ones become something more like a cat. Think ten or twenty thousand years.

TP - the reason the just-so stories are such a no-no in biology is that I am in the process of suggesting a scenario in which I have absolutely no empirical evidence.
