Yep, it happens. The result is a coydog. Open season year around on coydogs and coyotes in Illinois. Recognized by the IDNR. I will say it doesn't happen often. Usually the coyote eats any dog it can whip and vice versa.

Coyotes hunt foxes, wolves hunt coyotes and foxes. Ducks Unlimited did a study on it. BTW, pheasants can mate successfully with chickens.

Now as for viable. Do you mean living or living and able to reproduce? A horse/donkey cross will get you a sterile jackass.
