"decimated" comes from a practice that the Roman Army once practiced. When an army was conquered, the surviving troops were lined up and every 10th soldier was killed. Thus the "dec" in "decimated". No, no, no. When a Roman army didn't perform up to Roman standards they would kill 10% of their own troops. I also heard that it was sometimes a policy that the troops had to pick who died and then stone their friends to death. But I'm not 100% sure of that point. In any event, no one disappointed the Romans more than once. - Fred
