The question almost answers itself. If you see a clock on the beach next to a beautiful nautilus shell it hits you in a moment. The watch looks out of place, but the shell looks like other shells. If you were not familiar with clocks or that particular type of shell it is still obvious that the shell is some kind of shell, but the clock would immediately stand out as something different and unrelated.

Evolution is not like a million monkeys turning out Shakespear. It's like a million monkeys with an editor reading each sentence and stopping the monkeys when one gets it right and having all million monkeys start on the next sentence.

Evolution has produced many fine timekeeping organisms, it's just that they are not made out of brass and precious jewels, they are made from the tools available - proteans.
