Hi Tim,
Although WSTL had the favorable agreement with TXN, it was Alcatel that delivered over 50 % of DSLs to the marketplace worldwide. WSTL lost the CO DSLAM business to ALA except for BT which is deploying 50% Fujitsu/WSTL ( which I now hear may be GTE as well). WSTL wisely focused on ALA compatibile CPE and became a favored vendor. It is part of the reason for the success of their modems. EFNT has I believe 13% ownership by TXN.

Now however, the climate is changing and WSTL is utilizing Virata technology which has its own ALA compatible chips as well as TXN DSPs. Virata does the programming and thereby delivers cost effective solutions enabling OEMs to produce more cost effective devices -- especially for the emerging gateways (IAD) into the home for VoDSL.

My story I'm sure has left a lot out, but basically NOTHING IN DSL HAPPENED THE WAY MANY THOUGHT IT WOULD.

All the best,
Michael
