Let's say I call someone and they're not there and I leave my number and they call me back.

Can I say, "they contacted me"?

Hmm - I could call the President's office in Washington - leave my name and number with the receptionist.
Some lackey would call me back as a patronizing gesture.

I could then say, "I've been contacted by the President's office."
