There is a great deal that is unexplained, or so improbable that design would make more sense if it were not ruled out at the start.

I do not think you are grasping the point. If there is an accident that wipes out species, it is not a comment on the species-design. If the universe is generally orderly, but there is room for accident, then it may mean little more than that God does not interfere in the actual historical growth of the cosmos, but sets down "guidelines" for development that amount to a sort of proxy design, or incipient teleology. The possibility of accident itself does not call into question the overall design, once one accepts that God had some reason to allow chance elements to function, perhaps in order to permit a loosening of the causal fabric so that there was less resistance to the exercise of free will by rational creatures, like man.........
