Paul, Intel investors, check this out: Wit Capital claims Intel-based servers are the hottest product-spending category of all IT products. That includes storage systems and network hardware. They say they're getting their data from Gartner group, who has been the best for at least 25 years, IMO. Looks like the mainframe (finished last) is on its last legs.

Intel based servers ahead of storage! There are a couple of guys on the EMC thread, and the CEO of EMC himself that would suggest servers are becoming a satellite to storage. I don't know about that.

This horrible meal finally has been digested. Compaq's enterprise server business is now strong. No company has more leverage to the NT server business than Compaq. Although the emergence of e-commerce and Web-architected applications may not require more desktop PCs, it does require more servers. Results from our surveys of the GartnerGroup customer base indicate Intel-based servers are the hottest product-spending category (see Figure 4). Spending intentions on NT servers have grown to levels far above those of a year ago, or even those indicated on Jan1. Our survey results show that Dell's share in servers is stabilizing after years of cutting into Compaq's still-dominant share.
