I suppose you think they should have sent in Jimmy Carter to talk them out. That would have been the ideal thing to do. With a slight variation: Send JC to negotiate. THEN, send the INS to collect Elian while this was going on. Just like the Israelis did with Idi Amin Dada. Different set of characters, same script. Hmmm... I just noticed that the initials JC are the same for Jimmy Carter as for... ah never mind.
