Ox, perhaps Schwab would not allow ratio spreads online because your account is not yet approved for naked option positions, and you were attempting to sell more than you were buying.

The "proving yourself worthy" simply means that they screen for trading experience, assets, and income, before authorizing naked option positions. (They call that "Level 3".) Schwab is among the most conservative firms in that regard because of significant losses the firm suffered at the time of the 1987 crash.
