Paul,

AMD will prosper for the duration of the strong semiconductor business cycle. Once that comes to an end, I suspect they will resort to their old tactics of price bombing to gain market share - and sacrifice profits. The AMD leopard cannot change his spots completely.

Actually, it was Intel who started the current war with the X-box coup. Both companies have since stated their intentions to actively pursue the embedded x86 market, which seems like a bottomless pit. At one time MIPS was a respectable workstation processor, but their entry into embedded turned them into a $20 architecture.

AMD's strategy of using CMP (Sledgehammer) may rescue their ASPs by offering significantly higher performance, with only a small increase in manufacturing and engineering cost. What will Intel do to stop the slide?
