Yes, I remember the scene well, William Parrish (Anthony Hopkins) giving his daughter Susan Parrish (Claire Forlani --yum) those wise words of guidance.

Hopkins, one of my favorite actors, along with Michael Caine, Sean Connery and Clint Eastwood, (and others).

___

"If it's a good script, a good character, and they offer me enough money, I'll do it. It's as simple as that. Journalists ask me if it's the script or the character. None of these factors mean a damned thing; it's rubbish all that stuff. If I'm working with a wonderful actor and a good script and a good director, that makes it worthwhile. Brad Pitt on Meet Joe Black: He's a good actor and a big movie star and he's going to bring all the young girls to the box office and they'll get to see me at the same time. I get to stay at a nice hotel in New York while I film and they're paying me well and it's a nice big part, a helluva big part. That’s why I do it. All the rest is crap. All the rest actors talk about is horseshit."

On Doing Action movies like The Edge

I like action movies, I don't like Masterpiece Theatre. My only concern for this movie was if I could run fast enough. They took out three pieces of my back, I've got them in my refrigerator at home."
Hopkins had to have delicate back surgery during the film's production to deal with excruciating pain from an old injury.

".....Hopkins admitted himself to the Foothills Hospital in Calgary on the Canadian Thanksgiving weekend where he underwent a micro-surgical procedure to remove a ruptured disc. He was back at work filming the following Wednesday, having missed only one day of shooting. He returned a new man - and more than ready for the film's grueling action scenes, including fighting a monstrous bear, running through dense wilderness and being immersed in frigid water. "We tuned Tony up for the action genre," says Lee Tamahori. "Anyone that works with him now has a seasoned action veteran."
