re: fiber to home : Europe and Japan vs. US:

As most of us know in many areas of Western Europe many kilometers of fiber optic cable was placed underground in 90’s , primary between major cities and main paths within cities
(not last mile to home). They did it with fiber even though it was not used to full potential.
Ubiquitous twisted phone wire and much less common TV cable(most of TV channels is
transited via air) is also underground as opposed to US.
Considering high population density in Europe , the nature of the buildings which are made of
brick
there is unlikely streets and buildings will be ripped off to install fiber to home b/c enormous cost which would have to be absorb by customers in form of much higher fee.
For this reason multimedia over copper wire (VDSL) and fixed wireless like LMDS( perfect for large city due to shorter range: 4-5 km) will be more popular in Europe as well as Japan and others part of Asia.
Small, low populated Island is not an indication. I would look at Germany, UK, Italy, France etc.
In US it is a different story, however xDSL will play huge role within the next 4-5 years.
Big boys like SBC Comm, Bell Atlantic are betting on that.
