7/18...Nextel Loss a Bit Worse Than Expected

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Wireless telephone company Nextel Communications Inc. on Tuesday posted a second-quarter loss that was a bit worse than expected amid record subscriber growth and higher average revenues per customer.

Reston, Va.-based Nextel (NasdaqNM:NXTL - news) reported a loss of $292 million, or 38 cents a share, compared with a year-earlier loss of $315 million, or 52 cents a share.

Analysts had expected a loss of 36 cents a share, according to research firm First Call/Thomson Financial.

Nextel's second-quarter revenues jumped 59 percent, to $1.26 billion from $793 million a year earlier. Average monthly revenues per domestic subscriber were $74, up from $72 in the first quarter.

Nextel, which serves mostly high-spending business customers rather than consumers, said it added 677,000 new subscribers in the second quarter, bringing its total subscriber base to 6.2 million globally.
