SAN FRANCISCO, July 19 (Reuters) - Exodus Communications Inc. (NasdaqNM:EXDS - news) Wednesday reported a smaller-than-expected loss, as revenue gained sharply on the growth of its Internet hosting and network management for large businesses.

The company reported a net loss of 10 cents per share, or $42.5 million, in the second quarter, excluding the impact of amortization of goodwill and intangible assets. With those items added in, the loss would have been 12 cents a share. In the year-ago quarter, the net loss was $22.6 million, or seven cents a share.

Analysts had expected the second quarter loss to be 12 cents a share, according to First Call/Thomson Financial.

Revenue for the hosting company rose to $179.6 million, an increase of 321 percent increase over the prior year's $42.6 million and a 34 percent increase over the first quarter level.

Based on existing backlog, the company said that its annualized sales level will increase 39 percent to $877 million by the end of the next quarter.
