Hi Brian!

Hang on--Asia's back in drive seat of chip equipment spending....

And a darn good thing, too! They have always been an important part of the equipment market, and it's great to see them making a strong recovery.

Indeed, I'm getting the impression from my contacts that the US side is slowing a tad, and that the chip makers may be rethinking their 2000 spending plans. Yes, there's still time to yank some money back and hold it, or allocate it forward to 2001. I don't know of any stampede to cancel systems orders or the like, but clearly something's happening.

I've been saying that I thought late 2002 would be the start of the next downturn (or perhaps early 2003, if we're lucky). Asia may just keep us on that track; if the US economy has to continue to "do the heavy lifting" globally, well, I think we're getting just a wee tad tired (and Greenspan has certainly made it tougher)....

Mitch
