(BSNS WIRE) Isonics Funds Studies for New Applications Of Isotopically Pure
Isonics Funds Studies for New Applications Of Isotopically Pure Silicon Wafers

Business & Science Editors

GOLDEN, Colo.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 24, 2000--Isonics Corporation
(OTCBB:ISON/ISONW) has funded three additional R&D programs to
identify new applications which could benefit from the properties of
isotopically pure silicon wafers.
The first program is under the direction of Professor Jayant B.
Baliga, Director of the Power Semiconductor Research Center at North
Carolina State University (NCSU). The researchers will conduct
modeling studies and build basic power devices to determine the
performance benefits of the higher thermal conductivity of silicon-28.
Professor Baliga is well known for his contributions to the power
semiconductor field over the last 25 years and is the recipient of the
1999 IEEE Lamme Medal. He has over 100 patents in the field including
the basic IGBT (insulated gate bipolar transistor) structure that is
widely used today. The Power Semiconductor Research Center is an
industry funded center focusing on the next generation of silicon and
silicon carbide based power devices.
The second program is at Southern Methodist University (SMU) under
the direction of Dr. Peter Raad, Professor of Mechanical Engineering,
Dr. Raad's group will be developing techniques to measure the thermal
conductivity of thin films and will be modeling the effect of higher
thermal conductivity on the performance of silicon and gallium
arsenide transistors.
The third program is being conducted at the National Renewable
Energy Laboratory (NREL) in Golden, CO. NREL is a leading center for
solar cell research, and specializes in electro-optical materials. Dr.
Richard K. Ahrenkiel, the Principal Scientist and Team Leader for the
program, is a specialist in the area of minority carrier and
recombination lifetime analysis of semiconductor materials.
Dr. Stephen Burden, Isonics' Vice President for Semiconductor
Materials, remarked, "This brings to 12 the number of research
programs conducted or being conducted using Isonics proprietary Si 28
material. These research programs are determining a full range of
semiconductor applications for isotopically pure silicon and will
provide a solid scientific basis for semiconductor manufacturers to
use silicon-28 based wafers for their production needs."
Isonics is a world leader in isotopically engineered materials and
produces isotopically pure silicon-28 chemicals and wafers for the
semiconductor industry. Isonics also markets and sells stable isotopes
for the health care industry such as carbon-13 for diagnostic breath
tests and drug design, and oxygen-18 for positron emission tomography
(PET) imaging. Stable isotopes can be thought of as ultra pure
materials. This high degree of purification provides enhanced
properties as compared to natural materials. Additional information
