>> CSCO is a Gorilla in the enterprise sector. CSCO is more like a Chimpanzee in the Carrier/public networking sector (where the big growth & future of networking resides). In the Carrier space, CSCO will be facing near-Gorillas like NT, ALA, LU, ERICY, NOKIA, FUJITSU, SIEMENS...
If you want to continue that kind of analysis, which I'd recommend, it would be helpful to read the Gorilla Game. Using the rich set of metaphors and definitions supplied by Dr. Moore, you'd find that Cisco is facing a group of competitors that are in the King and Prince categories, not "near-Gorillas". While these companies are formidable, they don't have the same degree of control that a Gorilla does over its turf.
FWIW, my personal opinion is that penetrating the carrier space from a dominant position in enterprise networking will be an easier task for Cisco than the carrier gang will face in transitioning from a switching paradigm to anetworking one. The performance of LU, who was viewed as Cisco's biggest threat back in 1998, may be taken as preliminary confirmation of that position.
