Queries re index funds

Can anyone enlighten me -- is it really accurate to say that the managers of S&P 500 index funds don't care at what price JDSU trades on the day it is added; their job being only to mimic the S&P 500 as closely as possible? Is there no attempt to scalp the market by getting in early? What if something weird happened and resulted in an S&P 500 index fund making an exceptionally good or bad early trade, that shifted the fund's performance in a material way away from the S&P 500 itself? Can they in fact trade early in this situation by buying JDSU? The volume has been so huge for the last few days since the S&P announcement; I can't believe at least some of that isn't anticipatory buying by index funds, unless they're not allowed by their charters to do so. Oh, and last question: is JDSU added as of Wednesday morning at market open? So the S&P 500 will include JDSU in its overall performance as of Wednesday's opening price? Or would it be Tuesday's closing price? Thanks in advance for any responses. k
