You make a very good point. Just because the index fund can't benefit from speculation on a runup prior to S&P inclusion doesn't mean other members of the fund family can't. It ought to be a no brainer for the other managed funds, they have a market on close buy order sitting there waiting for them within their own fund family. Which makes me wonder if they will accumulate a large portion of their family's index fund needs, and save enough buying power to give it the final push Wednesday to close at the highest possible price, therefore the maximum gain for the managed fund.
This ought to be happening across the board, and one would think the investment houses will have their share of order flow as well.
If someone could point out the flaws in this theory, it would be worthy of discussion.
