As Internet Grows, Can Hardware Keep Pace?

Unlike prior commercial revolutions - telephones, power lines, railroads, highways and airplanes - government regulators play no role in making sure the Internet keeps pace with explosive growth.

Instead, those tasks are being largely met by Cisco Systems Inc., a Silicon Valley hardware giant with a current valuation of some $460 billion. Cisco, which sells its products in some 115 countries, enjoys an effective lock on the world's high-speed data networks.

``The fiber (optical cables) are the railroad tracks, and Cisco makes the trains,'' said Hal Varian, dean of the School of Information Management at the University of California in Berkeley. ``There's been a lot of investment putting fiber into the ground. But if you want to use that fiber, you need Cisco routers.''
