PARIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 24, 2000--Alcatel (Paris: CGEP.PA and NYSE:ALA) today announced that max.mobil., the Austrian network operator 100% owned by Deutsche Telekom, will build out an advanced new infrastructure using its broadband switching technology. The new network will facilitate the roll out of innovative fixed line voice and data services to corporations in Austria, and in addition will become the launch platform for 3G (3rd generation) broadband mobile services.
Since its inception in 1996, max.mobile has captured almost 38% of the market for GSM mobile services in Austria, and maintains the highest growth rate of any mobile service provider in that country. With the full support of its parent company, max.mobil. has now begun a transformation into a complete provider of telecommunications services addressing the entire corporate marketplace in Austria.
Its new portfolio is designed to offer the seamless provision of voice, data and Internet services over either fixed or mobile connections. In addition to demand from corporations based in Austria, many German corporations with operations in Austria are expected to benefit from services that are compatible with Deutsche Telekom's own.
Service providers entering into competition against well-entrenched opposition need the ability to create and deploy new services very quickly, often at a time when people and skills are in short supply. This was the prime reason for choosing the Alcatel solution. The company will deploy the Alcatel 36170 MultiService Platform, part of a family of broadband switching products which includes the Alcatel 670 Routing Switch Platform, the industry's most scalable ATM, MPLS and IP switch. With the emphasis firmly on multi-service, the 36170 MSP offers IP, ATM (asynchronous transfer mode), and Frame Relay services within a single chassis. Additionally the new network will be managed via the Alcatel 46020 Network Manager and its associated suite of product and service management modules. The suite offers service providers the opportunity to create, deploy and manage innovative services to customers in the shortest possible time, and removes much of the inherent management costs through the thorough automation of business processes, from ordering through to billing.
"The team at Alcatel was able to match its services exactly to our requirements. The company's technology is at the heart of our expansion and development plans and through implementation of its ATM platform, it will ensure that we are a highly competitive mobile operator in an industry driven by the need for broadband next-generation services" said Stefan Schutting, Head of Data Networks for max.mobil.
max.mobil. is adhering to an aggressive roll-out plan for its new services. The broadband platform has been deployed in Vienna, and in the second half of this year max.mobil will extend the rollout to all major cities in Austria. About max.mobil.
