JDN - Re: ". Frankly, I am worried that INTC may have boxed itself into a very elite corner with RAMBUS. "

The answer to that is yes - RAMBUS is controversial AND expensive.

However, Intel has shown some delayed flexibility with respect to memory options. The i815E looks to be a runaway success for Coppermine PCs using 133 MHz SDRAM.

When the Willamette hits, it will be expensive and initially be tied to RAMBUS - and hopefully the performance of such a combination will deliver good demand and command good prices.

At the recent Conference Call, Intel's Paul Otellini stated that Intel is looking at other memory for other price points for future Willamette PCs - probably for 2001.

Now - for RAMBUS costs - Dell is selling a 933 MHz Coppermine PC with 128 Meg RDRAM for $2799 with a 19" monitor, 45 Gig hard drive, etc.

So, it would appear that the RAMBUS cost issue is moderating - and Intel-based PCs with DRDRAM are priced more than an AThwiper - because they command more - and absorb some of that extra DRDRAM price differential.
