"Ten, >And second, this benchmark was run on a five-year-old P6 core implementing a God-knows-how-old x86
architecture. I wonder what sort of SPEC2000 results we'll see on Itanium, given that IA-64 is more dependent on
the compiler than other architectures.

You're asking us? Bring it on out so we can find out. I know, years in the making and a cast of thousands. Maybe
a race with Sun's Ultrasparc III?

Intel looks to have laid a strong foundation for servers with Pentium Pro and Xeon. That should help customer
acceptance of Itanium, McKinley at the top of the server happen more easily."

Don't get too excited about Itanium there. Regarding
SPEC2000 and Itanium... take a look at Spec95 and Spec2000
and notice that Intel went from a leadership position
to a trailing position (note 833 MHz Alphas... by the
way, 21264A .. no on-chip L2 *yet*).

specbench.org

Cache misses on in-order Itanium ought to make the
int numbers a little less than stellar. However,
Linley Gwennap stated 50 SpecInt95 and 80 SpecFp95.
Don't expect that to translate into leadership
int2000 numbers (more detail available from Paul DeMone
at RealWorldTech.com)

Also, and maybe more importantly... the Solaris on
Itanium goose is cooked:

news.cnet.com

Remember, Sun isn't in a leadership position due to
performance. They have been trailing big time for a while.
Note there is only a single Spec2000 benchmark out there
for Sun and it is a joke. Sun is leading because of
systems and solutions. More apps for Sun than anyone.
IBM has a more realistic chance than anyone as the S80
is very strong and yet Sun turns in a record quarter.

One wonders why anyone buys an Itanium system? Performance?
Ha! Maybe they buy them because they know it says
Intel Inside and no one ever got fired for buying Intel ;-)
