Being privileged to be a friend of a 30 year pro photog, I have been able to closely examine the difference between digital and film photography as it has progressed over the past few years.

Without going into technical detail, I will boil it down to this. For fine art, film photography is still the preferred standard. For advertising, digital photography is meeting the standards of that industry and giving the advantage of lower labor costs, faster turn around, more productivity, and lower overall cost.

For home photography, digital photography is very acceptable in terms of quality and cost.

A CoolPix 950 or 990 is a great camera for $500 to $900, with features that are much more capable than a point and shoot camera.
