Being "just and righteous" does not convey upon one the ability to imbibe alcohol with normal tolerance. God elsewhere has high praise for Lot, and here simply recounts a wholesome tale of keeping it in the family--one may assume, not without some small modicum of parental pride in doing so. Lot has already passed on his sterling seed to his delightful daughters; now he does so in a more literal sense; the three of them ensure that these "just and righteous" genetic qualities are preserved to God's glory in future generations of God's incestuous favorites. The ease with which Lot can be made to drink wine, and the ease with which he has blackouts, reminds one of the drunken Noah. In any case, Lot's potency was not diminished: both of his daughters become pregnant after having intercourse with Lot just once. Nothing like family pride...
Just prior to this Lot had offered his daughters to be raped by the thugs of the city:
19:8 Behold now, I have two daughters which have not known man; let me, I pray you, bring them out unto you, and do ye to them as is good in your eyes: (just a doting father trying to see that his daughters have all life's advantages...)
Keep in mind that this was the one family that God loved well enough not to blow to blue blazes and smithereens, like every other human being for miles and miles and miles around!! What a wise and loving God!
GENESIS
19:32 Come, let us make our father drink wine, and we will lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father.
19:33 And they made their father drink wine that night: and the firstborn went in, and lay with her father; and he perceived not when she lay down, nor when she arose.
19:34 And it came to pass on the morrow, that the firstborn said unto the younger, Behold, I lay yesternight with my father: let us make him drink wine this night also; and go thou in, and lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father. 19:35 And they made their father drink wine that night also: and the younger arose, and lay with him; and he perceived not when she lay down, nor when she arose. 19:36 Thus were both the daughters of Lot with child by their father. |
