STMicroelectronics Announces Optimized G.lite DSL Solutions for Mass Market Deployment

GENEVA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 25, 2000--

Developed in co-operation with Nortel Networks, new chipset

solutions will be compliant with the G.992.2 standard

STMicroelectronics (NYSE:STM) today announced a strategy to deliver Enhanced G.Lite chipsets to the mass market. Through a joint development project with Nortel Networks, STMicroelectronics will create an optimized G.lite Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Line ADSL chipset.

"This chipset will allow STMicroelectronics to offer a fully G.992.2 compliant and interoperable G.lite-optimized chip set for both head-end and CPE equipment," said Pietro Palella, General Manager for the Wireline Communications Division of STMicroelectronics. "While standard compliant, this solution will provide improved noise immunity, eliminate possible interference from AM radio frequencies, and increase available bandwidth, expanding the addressable consumer market for DSL service. Plus the increased speeds provided by Enhanced G.Lite, with up to 4 Mbps available, will meet bandwidth demands for applications widely used by the mass market."

In addition to improved performance, this solution delivers greatly increased density, providing capital savings that carriers need to make G.Lite DSL price points attractive to the mass market. Delivering G.Lite on a chipset designed specifically to the parameters of the G.992.2 standard differs from the common approach of enabling G.Lite service through software changes to chips designed to provide industry standard, G.992.1 full-rate ADSL.

"This cost-optimized G.Lite solution is a further step by STMicroelectronics to bring a full spectrum of consumer oriented DSL technologies and Internet connectivity to the mass market," said Aldo Romano, Corporate Vice President and General Manager of ST's Telecommunication and Peripheral/Automotive Groups. "Through patented innovative technologies, this G.Lite solution can save 80% of the cost of passive components of the customer premises equipment."
