One benefit of the whacked-out crazy portions of religious texts is that, because of the need to come up with some justification for the crazier parts, philosophy and intellectual thought in general has advanced a great deal. Without weird stories from the Bible, Kierkegaard (sp?) and all the other great thinkers wouldn't have had anything to work with.
