What need is there to come up with justifications for the "whacked-out" portions? Anyone can believe if they understand - it takes a true act of faith to believe without understanding. Besides, you shouldn't question God's word! No faith can survive without the need to incorporate some proscription against doubting. It wouldn't be faith without the abandonment of doubt. If doubt were allowed, as Douglas Adams wrote, God would "vanish in a puff of logic."
